Diamond tufted headboards are so beautiful but so expensive!  I seriously have only seen them on TV and in stores but none of my friends (nor myself) are fancy enough for this.

I found a site where are VERY talented girl turns her old ugly headboard into fresh, modern and luxurious diamond-tufted one and is kind enough to tell us exactly how it’s done.

The materials you will need are:

  • Old headboard frame & salvaged boards
  • Egg crate foam mattress topper (Twin sized. Even for a King headboard)
  • Fabric of choice
  • Craft cover button kit (3/4″ buttons)
  • Regular buttons
  • Upholstery twine
  • Gorilla glue

Let me remind you, this project cost her a whopping $44 to complete and she went from this:

You will have to see her site to get the full directions but to give you a general idea of what is done:

  1. Prepare the headboard by covering it with MDF or scrap wood
  2. Drill the holes for tufting (she has a great technique for making them perfect!)
  3. Add foam and fabric
  4. Cover the buttons with matching fabric
  5. Apply the buttons to the fabric (this would be the “tufting” part)
  6. Secure the fabric around the edges of the headboard
  7. Add backing (optional)

VOILA!

Now, this DIY is not for the amateur.  I’ll be the first to admit that.  If this project is over your head but this beautiful headboard is still on your wish list, you could hire somebody to follow this tutorial and still get the bed of your dreams for WAY less than you would ever pay in a store.

Something to consider!
