It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Modern, Minimal, Easy To Make DIY Hanging Wall Frame

First, here is what you will need:

materials

Materials

  • Print / photograph in your chosen size
  • 2 pieces of lightweight wooden strips (e.g. Balsa wood)
  • Wood stain and cloth
  • Natural rope
  • 2 eye screws large enough to fit the rope through
  • 56g/2oz. polymer clay block
  • Stapler / staple gun
  • All purpose glue
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

-X-acto knife

Now, here is how you will get it done:

Directions

  • Preheat your oven for the polymer clay according to the directions on the package.
  • First you will make the beads that will thread the rope.  Using an Exacto knife, cut two even blocks of clay and roll these in your hand until they are round and smooth.
  • Using a pencil, make a hole all the way through.  Use another bigger tool to make the hole large enough for the rope to fit though the middle.  You should have a large bead with a hole in it wide enough for the rope.
  • Bake according to the clay’s instructions.
  • While the clay is baking, stain the wood to your desired color and leave it outside to dry.
  • Measure out 1″ from either end of the wood strips and mark it with a pencil.
  • Insert the eye screws into those marks by twisting them into the wood all the way.
  • Take your print and lay it face down over what will be the top wooden strip (with eye screws in).  Line it up straight and centered.  Using a stapler, go along the wooden strip, stapling it down.  (An ordinary stapler will work on soft wood but you may beed a staple gun.)
  • Now do the same along the bottom strip. (If needed, use all-purpose glue for extra security before stapling.)
  • Take your clay beads and thread them onto the rope. Then thread one end of the rope through one of the eye screws.  Tie a simple knot and then same thing on the other side.  Trim the ends and use all-purpose glue to seal the edges and prevent fraying and untying.

You now have your custom-framed piece ready to be hung!
