It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

SUPER-SIMPLE Composting – For The Hesitant Beginner!

Materials:

  • Storage bin (darker color is best)
  • Drill

How you do it:

1.  Take your drill and drill holes all over your storage bin. (All sides, bottom and the lid as well.  You want good air circulation in there.) . Like so:

Drill-holes

2.  Put some dirt in the bottom of your compost bin.  Cheap soil or dirt from your backyard is fine.

3.  Add any food trimmings you have.  Peels, cores, eggshells, etc.  Also plant trimmings are great.
Add-scraps

4. As you have more food trimmings, add them to the bin, each time giving it a good mix by rocking it back and forth and ensuring you are really mixing it up and getting lots of air in there, too. The more you aerate it, the faster the process will go.  If the bin gets too heavy to rock you could always use a shovel to mix it up well.  Always keep the lid closed after adding food to it.

Most composting takes about a year to get a good soil going but because this method is so small and efficient, you should have good soil in 4-5 months.
