It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

See How A 99 Cent Store Plate Can Be An Awesome Mother’s Day Gift!

Mother’s Day is coming up and those of us who like to DIY it need to get a jump on this holiday!  Why not start now?

This is a wonderful craft that makes a memorable and treasured gift that Mom will keep forever.  (Be sure to put a date on it!)

Here is what you will need:

  • Plate (The ones pictured here are 8″ plates from the 99 Cent Store.)
  • Sharpie
  • Glass paint (You need the GLOSS OPAQUE version)
  • Sponge
  • Paint Brush

Here is what you will do:

  • Run the plate through the dishwasher.
  • User your Sharpie to write your special message.
  • Cut your sponge into the shape of your choice.  A heart seems perfect but you are the artist! Flowers, leaves, geometric figures or whatever you like.
  • Paint your sponge (generously) with the glass paint and then let it dry completely.  A hairdryer for about 10 minutes will speed up this process.
  • To make the thumb print, apply an even layer of paint on your thumb and stamp it on the plate where you want it.
  • Now you will need to cure the plate for use.  Set the plate into an UNHEATED oven and set the oven to 350.  (You don’t want to put the plate into a hot oven because the glass can shatter if not heated up slowly).
  • After 30 minutes, take it out and you’re done!  It’s also dishwasher safe if you put it on the top shelf.
