It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Ikea Pendant Lights Go From Basic to Beautiful

First of all, the fixtures pictured here were originally beige.  A simple coat of chalk paint in your selected color can make them pop in any shade.

Here is what you will need to cover the wire:

  • Rails from Ikea (or any similar curtain rail, hollow steel rod)
  • Sawsall
  • Clamp
  • Sandpaper

Directions:

  • You are basically going to cut the rod to size, thread the cord through and hang up the light fixture.

According to tidbits.com:

The best way to cut the metal safely, is to clamp it in a vice.  You’ll want to protect the surface of the rod with a rag or paper towels inside the clamp so you do not scratch the surface of your rod.

  • After the rod is cut and the ends are sanded smooth, thread the wire through the rod.
  • if you are using a cover plate (not included with this Ikea fixture but you could pick one up at Home Depot), insert it though the rod as well.  You want the rod tight up against the plate so it is all flush against the ceiling.  You can wrap some electric tape around the cord or tie a knot in the cord to make sure it is tight and secure.
  • Hang the light!

You have now taken a $15 Ikea fixture from basic to beautiful!
