Here is what you will need to make your own chalkboard paint:
- Flat-finish latex paint (color of your choice)
- Mixing container
- Unsanded tile grout
- Paint stirrer
- Roller or sponge paintbrush
- 150-grit sandpaper
- Chalk
- Sponge
Directions:
- If you are making paint for a small area such a door panel or to paint rocks, start with a cup of your flat-finish latex paint. Pour one cup of paint into a container.
- Add 2 tablespoons of the unsanded tile grout. Mix it up well with your paint stirrer ensuring all the clumps are gone. That’s your paint!
- Make sure your chosen surface which has been primed or painted previously. (If the paint that is there has a glossy finish, be sure to prep the surface properly by feather sanding it).
- Using a roller or a paint sponge, apply the chalkboard paint. Work in small sections making sure to go over it several times for even coverage.
- After the paint has dried, use your 150-grit sandpaper to feather sand it down to a smooth surface. Wipe off the dust.
- To condition your new chalkboard for use, take a piece of chalk and using the side of it, cover the whole chalkboard surface. Then use a damp sponge to clean it off.
