It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Make Your Own Drinking Glasses From Bottles!

Once you have selected you bottle of choice, this is a pretty simple process.

Here is how you do it:

  • If there is a label on the bottle, remove it by soaking the bottle in warm water till the paper comes loose.  Remove it all, plus the glue and dry thoroughly.
  • Decide where you want to cut the bottle and mark it off with a marker.  Remember you can only cut the glass where it is even, as opposed to tapered toward the top.
  • Now it’s time to cut the glass.  Load it into the glass cutter and align the blade with your markings.  Give it one spin around ensuring that the cut line meets up with itself.  If it doesn’t, the glass will break later.
  • Now that you have the incision in the glass, you will be running hot, then cold water over the cut line in 10 second increments  until the bottle splits easily into two pieces.
  • Using your coarse sand paper, first wet it and then sand down the newly cut edge of the glass till it feels quite smooth, then do the same with the fine sand paper.  Continue sanding with the wetted, fine sandpaper until the glass edge is smooth and safe to drink from!

Now when your friends ask you where you got your awesome drinking glasses, you can tell them that you made them yourself.  BOOM.

Here is a great video that will show you how all this is done:
