It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

The Magic Way To Clean Your Grill

All you need for this is:

  • Heavy plastic bag
  • Ammonia
  • Rubber band

Directions:

  • Pour 1 cup ammonia in a thick garbage bag, place your grate inside the bag and seal tightly.
  • Seal the bag tightly with a rubber band. The fumes from the ammonia is what gets your grate clean so you need to seal them in.
  • Place your bag in the sun and let it sit there until the following day. Like so:

  • After 24 hours, open the bag and remove the grate.  (Keep your face turned away because those fumes will burn your eyes.
  • Rinse the grate thoroughly. Voila!

Caution: Be aware that ammonia is a toxic substance to animals, grass and plants.  Make sure it is always very tightly sealed and kept away from any surrounding nature.

When disposing of the ammonia, the Poison Control Center recommends running it down the drain of a well ventilated sink, such as a garage sink.  If you put it down a drain, be sure to open all nearby windows for at least 10-15 minutes. Even better, you can take it to your local hazardous waste center.

Hope this tip helps!
