It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

What Happens When You Mix Yarn, Glue and a Beach Ball?

Have you seen our post on sparkle twine laterns?  This is pretty much the same craft only on a larger scale.

Materials:

  • Elmer’s Glue or Modge Podge
  • Beach ball
  • Yarn or Hemp yarn

Directions:

  1. Cover your work space and body with plastic.
  2. Using a sharpie, make a mark on the ball to highlight where the hole is so that you can easily deflate it later.  (The hole may be covered up so this mark will help you find it.)
  3. In a tupperware big enough to fit your yarn, mix your glue or Modge Podge with water.  (To get it all out, pour it out and then fill the container with water and shake it up so that you don’t waste any.) Water/glue mix should be about a 1:1 ratio.  Not too thick or too thin.  (See the video below for a visual on how it should look.)
  4. Unwrap a small bit of the yarn and submerge the whole roll of it in the glue mix.  It will sit there as you wrap the ball in yarn. Pull it off as you go ensuring that all the yarn that gets wrapped around the ball is covered in the glue mix.
  5. Set the ball in a bowl for stability.  Start wrapping the ball in the yarn.  Go all directions to make a random pattern.  You will pick up the ball and just keep wrapping.  (This is messy!  Make a plastic bib to cover your clothes.)
  6. When you are done, make sure you have the hole at the bottom uncovered.
  7. Pour extra glue over it and spread it over with your hands.
  8. Let dry for two days.
  9. Deflate the ball with a ball pump so you can save the ball.
  10. You will need to use your hands to pull the ball off the yarn a bit.  It’ll come out easily!
  11. You can hang it from the ceiling as is or check out the video to get the further directions to make it into a lamp!

Check out the video for a great visual on this project.

I personally think these are amazing!  What do you think?  Will you make one?
