It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

You Won’t Believe What They Made Entirely Out Of Pallets!

Here is a pallet project I never would have dreamed of creating.

If you have ever had a quote on how much it costs to build a wooden deck or any type of hardscaping, then you know how many zeros we are talking about.

This family has gone around the system, beyond what I ever thought was possible with reclaimed pallets.  This patio/deck that they have created is a summer dream!! (And with a heat lamp or two, it is a wonderful outdoor winter space, too.)

What I like about this is all it really needs is pallets.  Everything else just speeds it up or makes it nicer.  You can take this idea and start small, and grow it little by little.

  1. I think I would put some kind of flooring on top of the pallets for strength. and maybe use 2 x 4’s to reinforce the back and sides. It is a cute idea though 🙂

  2. You want a s$#%&!@*ier floor? Add some 3/4″ plywood and paint it. Beggers can’t be choosers. On a beer budget? This is perfect and good enough for any real person.

    I really like this!!

  4. This was awesome!!!!

  5. So… read all of the comments—worth considering.

  6. I love it just wish I could find palets that are completely closed. All of the ones I come across have the tops are board, open, board, open, etc, etc. I made a bench like the one they show but had to put plywood across the top to make it s$#%&!@*y.

@[100005031375879:2048:Billy Weston] BE GOOD in front of camper and could put carpet on it

  9. Charlie Boyt says:

    and I still don’t know

  10. Kim says:

I think staining would give it a more polished look and ripping strips to fill in with a different color stain would look nice. You can get weatherized stain.

  11. i would certainly stagger the joints between the pallets; it wouldn’t look so amateur/junkie.

  12. Alsie Abbott says:

@[1325499880:2048:Cheryl Abbott], could you build me one of these? I’ll watch the baby if you do!

  14. Debi B says:

I buy a TON, 2000 pounds, of wood pellets for the winter and they come on 1 wood pallet so there is NO need to worry about the weight of the people walking on this as long as you choose ones that are not broken to begin with.

  15. @[1106203599:2048:Angelica] another great idea for pallets xo <3 🙂

  16. Alice Lewis says:

old pallets are only good for termites. so be aware.

  17. I’ve never seen the “average” pallet that I would trust to bear even modest weights safely…..and they decay rapidly when exposed to the elements; not to mention the splinters!

  18. Nice concept but the pallets I’ve seen are awfuolly rough. What about slivers in the feet?

    • Joanne Ratcliffe says:

First line of directions – “sand down pallets to make them smooth and dirt free”.

You can find stronger pallets where heavy equipment or appliances are sold or stored.

  19. This is awesome.. Gonna do this in my back yard.. For sure……

  20. Have you ever walked on a pallet? The wood is not strong and your foot would go right thru it.

  21. Jody Smiley says:

why do they say “you won’t believe”… anymore I believe just about everything

  22. Mitzi Jones says:

I’d also stain it if it were mine, and agreed, might not be too s$#%&!@*y as far as weight goes, maybe reinforce it some how.

  23. A short fix till the wood rots…. but good idea.

  24. It is tacky looking. Staining instead of the whitewash would improve that greatly, Karen. Good idea.

  25. It looks great as a recycled project. I did the same thing this summer. Only I used treated plywood to create a floor, painted it with weather resistant paint. I purchased a sail to use a shade.

  26. That is awsome and many places give pallets away.

  27. @[100004242248455:2048:Jaké Monson] THIS!!

  28. @[823123010:2048:Natasha Larson]

  29. wow very nice and pretty

  30. ClassyCouple says:

WOW!! How trashy/tacky/whitetrash can you get???!!!!!

  31. The thing is pallets are not made from quality wood so they’ve probably put all that effort into something that probably won’t last very long.

  32. Pat Holoob says:

I had a whole patio built out of pallets over 23 years ago.

  33. @[1392187791:2048:Darien Singleton] this is what you need to do next to the pool or on the bank.

    Here you go @[1221635107:2048:Alicia Shaw]

  35. nice, but where do they get the pallets? most are not in good shape.

  36. Kathie Young says:

but will it rot in a couple years

  37. pallets are of untreated wood, I doubt they last a year

  38. Needs astro turf on floor

  39. Carol Conrad says:

    Great reuse of disposable materials.

  40. Lynn Birch says:

My husband and I have built 5 different pallet decks at 3 different locations. The one thing we did differently was that once we had the pallets in place, we used 1 X 4s as decking. They gave the deck much more stability. We also bolted the pallets together prior to screwing the decking in place. Our first pallet deck is still in pretty good shape after 10 years although the others are not faring as well.

  41. kathy says:

when are you coming to my house and do that for me

  42. Billie Lambert says:

Every time I show my husband something made of pallets his response is “termites”

  43. Sandra Brim says:

I am going to build this patio set but not using pallets for floor

  44. The ideas for pallet projects are endless.. I love them.

  45. You have to have a level yard and wear shoes. Pallets are full of splinters. Maybe you have to sand them down, not sure. Still a good idea.
